ArenaPlus Brought Derrick Rose to Cebu. The Ambassador Strategy Is Valuable, and Exposed.
ArenaPlus took Derrick Rose to Cebu for his third visit as ambassador in under a year. As paid channels narrow, a recognisable ambassador earns coverage and trust an ad can't, but ambassadors and giveaways are exactly what SB 2347 would ban. Here's the case for the strategy, the exposure, and what to check in your own contracts.

What happened
ArenaPlus held "Rose Meets the Queen: Derrick Rose in Cebu" on August 25 and 26, 2026, as reported by BusinessWorld, the Philippine Daily Inquirer, SunStar, the Manila Bulletin, and several other outlets. It was Rose's first visit to Cebu, his fifth trip to the Philippines, and his third as an ArenaPlus brand ambassador in less than a year. The 2011 NBA Most Valuable Player began with a Champion's Circle Appreciation Dinner for select ArenaPlus players at Shangri-La Mactan on August 25, then headlined a public event at SM Seaside City Cebu on August 26 featuring basketball activities, giveaways, and entertainment, a press conference, and a shooting display for the crowd.
ArenaPlus head Ethan William framed the event as a way to celebrate Cebu's basketball community: "Cebu has an incredible passion for basketball, and bringing Derrick here is one way for us to celebrate that community and give Cebuano fans an experience they can call their own." Coverage describes it as part of a push to bring major sports experiences and fan communities beyond Metro Manila.
Why it matters
When paid channels narrow, a recognizable ambassador does work an advertisement can't. A credible name earns media coverage, gives players something to attend, and builds familiarity and trust that a banner doesn't. The reach here came mostly from earned coverage of a single event, not from media spend.
The repetition is the more telling signal. One appearance can be a cameo. Three visits in under a year, the latest in a new city, reads as a sustained commitment to Rose as a brand asset, and ArenaPlus's own language about continuing to take major sports experiences beyond Metro Manila supports that reading. The two-part format also does two jobs at once. The dinner rewards high-value players, a retention touch of the kind that matters when silent churn is a known weakness. The public event reaches everyone else.
The catch is that ambassadors and sponsorships are exactly what the leading proposal in Congress targets. Senator Escudero's SB 2347 would ban gambling advertising, sponsorships, celebrity endorsements, influencer campaigns, product placements, and promotional giveaways across all media. It includes a one-year transition period during which no new advertising or sponsorship agreement could be entered into, except where needed to wind down existing obligations. Our reading is that renewing an ambassador deal after passage would likely count as a new agreement, though that depends on the final text. The narrower House Bill 10982 targets online gambling advertising and has not yet had its first reading.
Events are not exempt from today's rules either. Event coverage, social content, signage, and giveaways are promotional material, and PAGCOR has already acted on this category: it fined Casino Plus ₱1 million earlier this year over an unapproved promotional giveaway tied to a celebrity endorsement. Nothing in the coverage suggests the Cebu event lacked approvals. The point is that the formats that make ambassadors valuable are the ones regulators already scrutinise.
