What happened

HSBC has begun rolling out RedCoin, a Hong Kong dollar stablecoin, to more than three million users of its PayMe consumer payments app. This follows HSBC and Standard Chartered-led Anchorpoint receiving Hong Kong's first stablecoin issuer licenses in April 2026. Anchorpoint had already begun rolling out a separate HKD-pegged stablecoin, HKDAP, in August 2026. RedCoin is HSBC's own retail-facing product, integrated directly into PayMe. Plans include tokenized investment subscriptions and expansion into institutional use cases.

This is a full retail launch, not a sandbox pilot. A licensed major bank is putting a stablecoin wallet in front of millions of everyday consumers in a jurisdiction that has completed its stablecoin licensing framework.
